One of big challenge for any DBA is to remove the bloat without any downtime, In Open Community PostgreSQL we have some tools like pg_repack, pg_squeeze, pgcompact etc to remove bloat on table or indeces without any downtime and impact on the on going transactions.
But why we dont have this kind of feature in EDB PPAS, why EDB dont have its own such tools to help their clients to resolve the bloat issue in mission critical environment where downtime is next to impossible.
Is there any workaround in EDB PPAS 9.4 to remove the bloat on table and indices without any downtime.
hi @Moin, yu can use this tools in EDB, remember that edb is based on postgresql.
just Install the tool, this tools are extension
It too agree with you on this that we can use this tools in EDB. But my Question is to EDB Support why they are not supporting this tools ?
If they really support any of those tools, then i will be first one to use.
We have been consistently working with the community to make vacuum operations which are performed automatically by autovacuum to work efficiently and ensure that bloat doesn't occur. The tools might work great however having the issues fixed in the core is our priority.
Mr. Robert Hass who is also our Chief Database Architect has elaborated on the direction in which-we are moving while also touching on the tools available in the following blog :
Hope this helps.
