How to Install Postgres in Containers for Developers

Deploying on containers is bigger than just putting your database on containers. Join Postgres experts Marc Linster and Shaktisikha Sahoo as they provide a step-by-step guide to installing EDB Postgres on EDB Postgres Docker Containers on Linux (CentOS).

Highlights of the step-by-step guide and demo include:

  • How to access the container repository
  • How to get the container and how to install it
  • How to initialize and start the container

Question:

How are database upgrades managed for persistent data?

Answer:

We have a separate edb-as11/10 container with additional failover functionalities and migration tool which takes care of data migration during upgrades/updates and helps in persisting data. We have the migration tool and edb-as images at "containers.enterprisedb.com/edb" repository.

_____

Question:

How stable is the database instance in containers?

Answer:

The database instance exists as long as the containers do.

_____

Question:

This morning, I noticed when I was having a look at CentOS 8 that docker doesn't seem to be supported. Is there a plan for something outside of docker on CentOS8?

Answer:

EDB does not support containers on Centos 8 yet. But it's supported in the docker community. So as Marc stated, it will also be supported by EDB when Centos 8 support comes to picture for our products.

_____

Question:

Do we have any case study or have any production database running in docker with dB size more than 1 TB? Do we have any limitations over the size of the database, because the management of multiple data files is difficult where data file cannot grow beyond 1gb?

Answer:

We do not have any database on our own running in docker of that size. But we do have customers of Containers project and they might have such instances. Our Containers sales team might have actual data for this question.

_____

Question:

How much is Postgres compatible when switching from a different DB?

Answer:

As per my information, we have products like the migration portal and MTK for this. However, as far as Containers is concerned, we don't support migration from any other DB yet.

_____

Question:

Do we have a Postgres operator to configure on K8s?

Answer:

Yes, We have Containers 2.5 release with Kubernetes operator support for PostgreSQL advanced server containers. It's out there on the website.
