Join EnterpriseDB and VividCortex, Wednesday, August 7th at 10am ET, as we discuss how to keep your enterprise Postgres servers consistently available and fast.

In this free webinar, you’ll learn:
  • The various tasks — monitoring, administration, etc. — required to keep a database server working well, and how they differ
  • Why it’s hard to monitor databases with general-purpose monitoring tools
  • The main tools available for enterprise Postgres needs
  • How these solutions differ, and when and why to choose each of them for specific cases
By the end of this session, you will have an understanding of how to avoid downtime and optimize the user experience with database monitoring and management tools.

Q & A Session:

Question:

Does EDB Postgres Enterprise Manager work with AWS RDS?

Answer:

The ability to use PEM to monitor Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL was explored previously with PEM 6 using the remote monitoring capabilities and was written up in a blog post that is available here. While PEM 7 has not been directly tested for monitoring RDS, a similar approach may work suitably. EDB has not tested this with PEM 7.

_____

Question:

How many weeks is the VividCortex trial period?

Answer:

Our free trial is 2 weeks for an unlimited number of users and 20 servers standard - more if needed (also free). You can access our support team throughout the trial and our experts will provide a Free Trial Review of your environment.

_____

Question:

How is VividCortex priced?

Answer:

Our pricing is per-server per-year. User seats are unlimited, so as many people as you wish can use the product.

_____

Question:

Where does VividCortex sample if we're using SSL?

Answer:

For SSL, we can't sniff the packets off the network interface so we use alternative methods like query logs or pg_stat_statements.

_____

Question:

Can VividCortex provide reports like Oracle AWR?

Answer:

You can get reports that achieve similar goals, but not exactly the same thing. We can work through your exact needs on a call and help figure out how our features map to your requirements!

_____

Question:

Which Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) does VividCortex monitor?

Answer:

Our platform monitors MySQL, Postgres, MongoDB, and Redis; plus managed variants such as RDS and Aurora.

_____

Question:

Do EDB PEM or ViviidCotrex allow you to store monitoring information for historical analysis, profiling different business periods and bottlenecks over time? If so, where?

Answer:

VividCortex retains performance monitoring data for historical analysis; up to 3 years by default. The metrics are stored in our fully-managed cloud-hosted SaaS platform.

_____

Question:

How does VividCortex work with Aurora kernel?

Answer:

VividCortex supports monitoring of databases like Aurora, from the RDBMS layer's perspective, but does not directly monitor their underlying storage system which is proprietary and not open to inspection.

_____

Question:

Is EDB Postgres Enterprise Manager a free tool?

Answer:

EDB Postgres Enterprise Manager (PEM) is part of a suite of tools that you get with an EDB subscription that includes enterprise management functionality such as HA and DR.

_____

Question:

Does VividCortex monitor SQL Server and Oracle?

Answer:

Not at this time, no.

_____

Question:

How does VividCortex collect metrics from the database?

Answer:

An agent monitors several aspects of performance including SQL workload, database internals, and underlying OS and hardware. Specifics are available on our documentation, https://docs.vividcortex.com/

_____

Question:

Does packet sniffing require open network protocols? How does that work with SSL and network security?

Answer:

The only thing required is non-SSL network connections. If you use SSL, we have several alternatives for capturing the SQL workload, and our engineers can help advise you on what's best for your needs.

_____

Question:

Doesn't packet sniffing only directly measure response time? So high CPU queries that are fast would not be identified?

Answer:

Packet sniffing measures response time, but also captures a lot of additional details such as the SQL, parameters, prepared statement statistics, error response codes, client IP and port, user, and database. By tying this together with other metrics captured from within Postgres, we're able to present a cohesive and comprehensive picture of what's happening from both the user's and the database's perspective.
