Hi Everyone,

could anyone help me getting started with postgres. Each time I want to restore the dvdrental sample database, I get the attached message.

Kind regards,

Re: cannot start with postgreSQL

Hi,

The problem was with the tar file. You need to extract the tar file instead of creating one from the ZIP file you downloaded.

The issue got resolved and the database was loaded one we extracted the zip file.

Hi kamalm,

Hope you are doing good.

Could you please let us know the steps you have performed to take backup and restore. Also let us know the exact version of your source and target database.

Re: cannot start with postgreSQL

Hello respected (EDB Team Member) SwagataBanik,

first thanks a lot for your reply and time.

I’m new to postgres and SQL and try to learn first from the dvdrental
sample database of postgres in addition to other learning sources like
https://community.modeanalytics.com/sql/tutorial/ and
https://www.w3schools.com/sql/, But I prefer to have postgres on my
computer. Here are the steps I performed.

1- Downloaded the installer file (postgresql-10.3-1-windows-x64)

2- Went exactly through the steps on
http://www.postgresqltutorial.com/install-postgresql/

3- Verified the installation through pgAdmin and psql, but in psql I
couldn’t enter the password I wrote before and when pressing enter the psql
shell disappeared.

4- I got some notes from the youtube regarding the path of bin and
reinstalled the program. This time the psql shell did not disappear, but I
still cannot write the password I gave during the installation.

5- During restoring the dvdrental, all steps went well until clicking
the restore button and then the message “failed” appeared.

6- I cannot even add any tables; after saving the database_name and
creating a new table, it went smooth but execution of steps fails.

With kind regards,

Re: cannot start with postgreSQL

Hi Swagata Banik,

Windows 10 Enterprise (64-bit operating system). I'm not sure, but could these messages be related to activation of windows, because about one week ago there is a notification regarding activation of windows.

Thanks,

Re: cannot start with postgreSQL

Hi Mohamed,

Two things, one download the archive again, please share the link with us as well. And can you please check on the website from wehre you downloaded the file for dvd rental if it needs to be extracted or it can be used directly. I believe there would be steps to restore the database on the same as well.

Second, your pgadmin is able to connect so the postgres installation is working fine. It would be great if you can go to the postgres installation folder and find the restore utility and give the path to the binaries. here is a link that might help::

Re: cannot start with postgreSQL

Hi Mr. Amit,

Here is the link from which I downloaded the archive. It has  .zip extension so I converted it online to .tar extension. Then went through the steps.

Re: cannot start with postgreSQL

Hi Mr. Amit,

I had a look at the link you have sent and the steps there have already been done. I repeated and found that the bin bath was stated there correctly in its field.

Can you try the following::

C:\>cd C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\9.5\bin
