Bart in a DR solution

curious if anyone is using bart in a DR solution.

- is it possible to restore bart backups taken with one bart server and restoring them with another bart server?

- is it possible to have multi bart servers with replication between them?

- is it possible to back up one postgres with multiple bart servers ?

regards

Matt

Re: Bart in a DR solution

Hi Matt,

Bart is a Backup and Recovery tool is an administrative utility providing simplified backup and recovery management for multiple local or remote EDB Postgres Advanced Server and PostgreSQL database servers.

- is it possible to back up one postgres with multiple bart servers ?

Response: Yes you can backup the postgres with multiple bart servers, however taking backup of one postgres cluster at a time is not possible you have to take one after other.

- is it possible to restore bart backups taken with one bart server and restoring them with another bart server?

Response: Yes it is possible to restore bart backups taken with one bart server and restoring them with another bart server if your bart versions are same.

To answer your below query we would require exact requirement what you like to setup, to asnwer according to the context what you are trying to acheive with BART server with replication. However replication between multi bart servers is not possible because BART server doesn't have its own database it is a tool used to take backup and restore the PostgreSQL.

- is it possible to have multi bart servers with replication between them?

Hope this helps you.

-  Are there any special considerations need to get the above scenario to work.  is there a guide or doc with step to set this up.

EDB: General guidelines are as below

1. You should have BART installed from where to restore BART backup

2. Check to ensure that the host where the backup is to be restored contains enough disk space

You can go through the documentation available at below for considerations need to take care before BART RESTORE

(Section 5.4.8, assuming BART version 2.2)

Re: Bart in a DR solution

Awesome,  thanks for the info,

would it be possible to use somehting like rsync or lsyncd to replicate the bart backups folders/files and wals to my destination bart server in a different geographical location via a high speed link.

Re: Bart in a DR solution

Hi @MattGorham ,

Yes, you can send the BART backup using rsync to other locations and then restore there.

You can then restore the full backup there or do PITR if you have WAL's transferred there.

Please get back to us in case of any issues/queries.

Re: Bart in a DR solution

looking for best practice or maybe another customer that has a similar setup that work well.

we would like to  use bart in a DR setup.

senario one - two bart servers in two different geographic locations backing up the same postgres servers.

scenario two - two bart servers using a third party tool like rsync to replicate basebackups and wals between the two bart servers in different locations.

has either of these scenarios been implemented with success.   Looking for recommendations for the best most reliable solution.

Re: Bart in a DR solution

Hi MattGorham,

Below are the recommendations:

1.Scenario One: Two bart servers in two different geographic locations backing up the same postgres servers.
Answer: Yes, You can setup the two BART servers over the different geographical locations and backing up the same Postgres Server and you can restore the backup from any of the BART servers. However, we recommend you schedule the backups at different time, so it will not conflict with each other.

    Recommendations:
1.Recommend same BART server version on both locations.
2.Recommend same configuration on both the BART servers.
3.Both BART servers and Postgres server are able to ping each other and 'scp','rsync' should be working fine.
4.Recommend the same BART catalog structure.
5.Recommend to schedule the backups at different time, So it will not conflict with each other.

2.Scenario Two: Two bart servers using a third party tool like rsync to replicate basebackups and wals between the two bart servers in different locations.
Answer:Yes, You can send the BART backup using 'rsync' to other locations and then restore there. And you can replicate the basebackup and WALs between the two BART servers in different locations.
